Food Labeling Resource Guide

A Practical Management Tool For Dairy Manufacturers and Marketers

The legal requirements for food labeling can often be complex and highly technical. The Food Labeling Resource Guide is designed as a practical management tool to assist Wisconsin dairy companies and their business customers in complying with the applicable regulations and in using the food label to its best marketing advantage.

This Guide is a practical and handy reference to:

  • answer basic questions about labeling requirements and how they affect dairy manufacturers and marketers.
  • help dairy manufacturers and marketers go beyond compliance and take the best marketing advantage of the food label.
  • identify additional resources to help implement the requlations.

The Guide includes three major sections:

  • The first part consists of several chapters addressing the five basic label components that are mandatory on packaged products sold at retail to consumers.
  • The second part provides information on various product claims that can be used, on a voluntary basis, as selling points for qualifying products.
  • The third section is a practical how-to chapter which integrates key points that are essential in designing a label that complies with federal requirements. It also includes a list of Resources and Appendices to help dairy manufacturers and marketers with additional sources of information to keep abreast of labeling issues and requirements.
